The 'Gers host The Students

The Clearer Water Irish Cup Round 5 takes place this Saturday, with Carrick Rangers hosting Queen's University.

The 'Gers go into Saturday's cup tie having been heavily defeated last Saturday, at home to Glentoran. It was a day to forget for the Amber Army with Pat Hoban finding the net six times. With 3 score draws in their last 5 league games, Stephen Baxter will be aiming to return to winning ways and progress in the cup.

For 'Gers Assistant Manager, Peter Thompson, Queen's University and the Irish Cup hold particular fond memories as back in 2020, the Students, then managed by Thompson recorded one of the biggest upsets in cup history, defeating Linfield 2-1 in the opening round. Lightning almost struck twice as they were drawn against Glentoran in the next round, but a late Glentoran winner put a stop to the QUB cup run.

The sides have only met once before, in October 2024 in the League Cup, Queen's University defeating the 'Gers on the night. Christopher Middleton with a strike from the half-way line to earn the Students the win.

Stephen Baxter remains without without Ethan Boyle, Nedas Maciulaitis (both knee), Cameron Stewart, Joe Crowe (rib), Jimmy Callacher (hand), Kyle Cherry (hamstring), Seanan Clucas (knee) and Nathan Gartside (quadricep).
