Report | Newry City 4-1 Carrick Rangers

A lethargic display from Rangers resulted in a deserved defeat at the Showgrounds.

Having interrupted a run of three losses with a midweek win over Portadown, the ‘Gers looked to build momentum coming into this fixture.

However, the game got off to a frustrating start as a knee injury forced skipper David Cushley off.

Jim Ervin took the armband while Kyle Cherry came off the bench and into the midfield.

City shaded the opening stages, which was reflected when they broke the deadlock just before the half hour.

Dale Montgomery’s cross into the box was headed towards goal by James Teelan and after Ross Glendinning made the save, Donal Rocks followed in to nod his side in front.

Somewhat against the run of play, Rangers drew level five minutes from the break.

Andy Mitchell’s free-kick was headed into his own net by Darren King to restore parity at the interval.

Another change was forced early into the second half as Cherry, who himself had come on for Cushley earlier, was swapped for Peter McKiernan due to a groin strain.

Just after the hour mark, Darren Mullen’s men regained their lead.

A long throw into the Carrick box wasn’t dealt with and it fell for Philip Donnelly who hooked the ball into the bottom corner.

Just minutes later, the hosts grabbed their third. A defensive lapse allowed Rocks to race towards goal; he tried to round Glendinning who denied him, but the loose ball was fired in by the supporting Teelan.

The visitors very nearly pulled one back when Emmett McGuckin’s cross from the right was met by an overhead kick by Cameron Stewart, but he was kept out by a fine Steven Maguire save.

The game was put to bed on 83 minutes as Donal Scullion chipped the ball in for Teelan who took a touch before side-footing beyond Glendinning for his brace.

Ultimately, Rangers fell to a defeat that saw them miss the opportunity to return to seventh spot in the league table.
